Nebraska AAU Wrestling hosted their annual Nebraska AAU State Folkstyle Wrestling Championships this past weekend at the Expo Center in Kearney, Nebraska. Over 250 kids, competing across four age groups, competed for a state title. 

Youth1 recaps the 6th-8th grade division below.

75-pounds
Nicholas Stoltenberg of Meneely School of Wrestling defeated Barrett Stickelman of the Midwest Destroyers in impressive fashion 16-5 victory in the championship match. Stoltenberg finished first in the Nebraska USA 2013 District 6/7-Syracuse a few weeks ago. It was consolation champion Trey Arellano of the Sidney Federation Club who took second place against Barrett Stickelman.

80-pounds
Adam Kinnaman of Meneely School of Wrestling outmatched Kaden Vowers of Sidney Wrestling Club, 5-4, in the title match of the 80-pound contest. Kinnaman was a recent champion of the Lincoln Jr. Hawk Club Tournament earlier this year. Vowers defeated consolation champion Jerryd Hernandez of Scottsbluff Wrestling Club, 9-0, to secure second place.

85-pounds
Jack Huffman of the MWC Wrestling Academy took top honors with a 7-2 decision victory over Mario Ybarra of the Mitchell Wrestling Federation in the 85-pound championship match. Consolation bracket winner Chance Fry of the Meneely School of Wrestling took position of second with a 4-3 win against Mario Ybarra.

90-pounds
Stone Mendez of Meneely School of Wrestling became the 90-pound champion with a 4-3 finish against Jorgen Johnson of Alliance Wrestling Club in the title match. It was consolation winner Creighton Baughman of Team Grice who won second with a 10-3 victory over Jorgen Johnson.

95-pounds
Cristian Chavez of Scottsbluff Wrestling took home the 95-pound title with an 8-1 victory over W. Zachary Swanson of Mitchell Wrestling Federation. Chavez won the Sidney Smackdown District 1 Qualifier in the beginning of February. Phillip Moomey of the Kearny Mat Cats defeated Swanson in the true 2nd place match 7-5.

100-pounds
Nathan Rodriguez of Millard South Wrestling, a 2nd place finisher in last year’s event, won the 100-pound championship in 0:43 against Wyatt Allan of Wood River in the championship match. Wyatt Allen held control of second place after defeating Nicholas James of the Kearny Mat Cats.

105-pounds
The championship of the 105-pound contest went to Austin Miller of the Lincoln Wrestling Club after a pin in :52 seconds against Nolan Quandt of Millard South Wrestling Club. Miller won the Lincoln Jr. Hawk Club Tournament just a weekend ago. Consolation champion Cameron Riggs pinned Nolan Quandt in 2:23 to secure second place.

110-pounds
Jeffrey Heinz of the Westside Wrestling Club defended his AAU State title when hetook home top honors of the 110-pound bracket after a 0:47 second pin on Darryn Walters of Mitchell Wrestling Federation. Heinz recently won the Nebraska USA District 5 tournament the weekend prior. Taking second place was consolation champion Trenton Elliot of Tekamah-Herman Wrestling with a victory by fall over Walters in 1:30.

115-pounds
Curt Randall of Westside Wrestling Club won a thrilling 8-6 decision against Benjamin Chamberlain of Millard South Wrestling Club in the 155-pound championship match. Randall was a winner at the Lincoln Jr. Hawk Club Tournament last weekend. Layton Mullinex of Duncan Wrestling took home the third place prize with a first period fall over Reece Vermeer. 

120-pounds
Ethan Sherman of Crete won the 120-pound title with a 5-4 victory against Jake Oltman of the Lincoln Junior Hawks. It was consolation bracket winner Noah Pattron of Seward who secured second place by forfeit against Jake Oltman.

125-pounds
A 3rd place finisher in last year’s event, Zac Charity of Millard South Wrestling won his first AAU State Championship when captured the 125-pound title with a 7-1 decision over Hudson Pearman of Valentine Badgers. Hudson Pearman held second after a pin on Dylan Bassinge of Beatrice Wrestling Club.

130-pounds
Out of the 130-pound contest, Jacob Pinkerton of the Beatrice Wrestling Club defeated Ty Connely of Kearney Catholic in 3:49. In this two person match, Connely secured second place.

135-pounds
Bryant Wilson of Alliance Wrestling Club defeated Colby Haas of Sidney Wrestling, 10-4, in the championship match. Colby Haas obtained second with a 7-2 decision over Drake Gilliland of Mitchell Wrestling Federation.

140-pounds
Braiden Ruffin of the Midwest Destroyers came in first place after a 3-0 victory against Bryson Fisher of Chase County Wrestling. Ruffin won the Midwest Destroyers ‘Bad to the Bone’ a weekend prior. Ryan Haskill of Madison took home third place when he pinned DJ Stephen by fall in 2:04. 

145-pounds
Emerging from the 145-pound competition was Colton Cavaness of Columbus Wrestling Organization with a 6-4 overtime win against Prestin Melroy of Holdrege Optimist Club. Consolation finalist Braden Trimble won a 4-1 decision against Prestin Melroy to claim rights to second.

152-pounds
Colby Collier of Sandhills-Thedford captured the 152-pound title after pinning Wyatt Olcott of Columbus Wrestling Organization in 1:10. Olcott did maintain a second place standing after achieving a 13-1 victory over consolation finalist Nathaniel Cuello of Sidney Wrestling Club.

160-pounds
Kobe Paez of Scottsbluff Wresting defeated Kade Price of Sidney Wrestling with a 0:45 pin in the title match of the 160-pound weight-class. Kade Price held onto second place after a 10-0 victory against Bronson Titus of the Holdrege Harvesters.

171-pounds
Tyler Gideon of the Burwell Longhorns won the 170-pound title after pinning Brandon Silva of Madison in 2:54 in the championship. Silva finished second with a 6-0 final over Jarrett Myers of Lincoln Junior Hawks.

189-pounds
Peyton Hill of Sydney Wrestling came away with a 3:00 pin on Jose Ambriz of Broken Bow Wrestling in the final round of the 1989-pound bracket. In the two person contest, Jose Ambriz came in with the second place finish.

250-pounds
Wyatt Gutzmer of Duncan Wrestling emerged with the 250-pound title after pinning Cory Harper of the Scottsbluff Wrestling Club in 1:42 in the final match. Brook Turner of Millard South Wrestling Club won the bronze medal with a victory by fall over David Duncan in 2:31.
